About this word counter

This free word counter is built for writers and bloggers who need quick, accurate counts without opening a separate document. Use it to stay inside a meta description's character limit, keep a headline tight, hit an essay or assignment's word count, or check how long a blog post will take readers to get through before you publish it.

Everything runs in your browser as you type — your text is never uploaded or stored anywhere. The one exception is if you tap "Share My Text": that specifically sends your text to us so we can generate a short link for you to share.

Frequently asked questions

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute, a commonly used average for adult silent reading, rounded up to the nearest minute.

How is speaking time calculated?

Speaking time is estimated at 130 words per minute, a typical pace for reading a script or speech aloud, rounded up to the nearest minute.

What counts as a word?

Any sequence of characters separated by whitespace counts as one word, the same way most word processors count words.

What counts as a sentence or paragraph?

A sentence is any run of text ending in a period, question mark, or exclamation point. A paragraph is any block of text separated from the next by a line break.

Does this tool store or upload my text?

Using the counter itself never sends anything to a server. The only exception is if you tap "Share My Text" — that specifically sends your text to us so we can generate a short link for you to share.

Is there a limit to how much text I can paste?

No. The tool works entirely in your browser, so you can paste anything from a single sentence to a full manuscript.
